Every acid reflux cause is really one cause
Between your esophagus and stomach sits a ring of muscle, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). When it stays shut, acid stays down. Acid reflux happens when the LES opens at the wrong moment, or is too weak to hold. Everything on this list either forces that valve open or weakens it. New to this? Start with what acid reflux is โ
The 9 most common acid reflux causes
- Eating too fast. A large volume of barely chewed food plus swallowed air arrives in minutes. The stomach stretches, pressure rises, and the valve gives. This was my cause. Slowing down is measurably protective.
- Large meals. A full stomach pushes upward on the LES like an overfilled balloon. Three big meals cause more reflux than five small ones.
- Trigger foods. Fatty and fried food slows stomach emptying; chocolate, peppermint, coffee and onion relax the LES; tomato, citrus and spicy food irritate an already sore esophagus.
- Lying down or bending soon after eating. Gravity is your friend. Remove it within 2โ3 hours of a meal and acid pools at the valve.
- Late-night eating. Combines a full stomach with lying flat โ the worst pairing for night-time reflux.
- Excess weight around the abdomen. Extra pressure on the stomach from the outside, all day long.
- Hiatal hernia. Part of the stomach slips above the diaphragm, so the LES loses the muscular support that normally helps it stay closed.
- Smoking. Relaxes the LES and dries up the saliva that normally neutralises acid.
- Pregnancy and certain medicines. Hormones relax smooth muscle, and some regular medicines can too โ ask your doctor whether any of yours affect the valve.
My experience: I ate every meal in under five minutes for most of my life. No single food caused my GERD โ the speed did. When I finally trained myself to eat slowly and chew properly, the daily burning disappeared within a few months. Read the full story โ
Does stress cause acid reflux?
Indirectly, yes. Stress rarely makes you produce more acid, but it makes the esophagus more sensitive to the acid that is there, slows digestion, and pushes you toward the habits above โ rushed meals, late snacks, coffee. Fix the habits and stress loses most of its power.
How to find your own cause
- Keep a simple log for two weeks: what you ate, how fast, and when the burning started.
- Time your meals. If lunch is regularly under 10 minutes, start there.
- Remove one trigger group at a time rather than everything at once.
- Note night-time symptoms separately โ they usually point to late meals or lying down too soon.
See a doctor if reflux happens twice a week or more, you have trouble swallowing, lose weight without trying, or notice black stools or vomiting. Frequent reflux can damage the esophagus โ that's GERD, and it needs a proper diagnosis.
What to do next
Knowing the cause is half the fix. The other half is changing the habit โ here's how to treat acid reflux step by step. If eating speed is your weak point, that's exactly what the FixMyStomach app was built to retrain.
