How to treat acid reflux
so it stays gone

Doctors calm the fire. Habits remove the fuel. This is the exact order I changed things to go from daily GERD pain to zero acidity โ€” and what the evidence says about each step.

Treat the valve problem, not just the acid

Acid reflux happens when the valve between your stomach and esophagus opens under pressure. Medicine makes the acid less harsh; it does nothing about the pressure. Lasting treatment means lowering the pressure โ€” how much you eat, how fast, when, and what. Do these in order; each one builds on the last.

Step 1 โ€” Slow down and chew

The single most under-rated fix. Fast eating stretches the stomach with poorly chewed food and swallowed air, and the valve gives way. Make each meal last 20 minutes or more. Put the fork down between bites. Chew until the food is almost liquid. Studies show slower eating cuts reflux episodes โ€” and it's the habit that finally fixed mine.

My experience: I could follow every food rule my doctor gave me. Slowing down was the one thing I couldn't do โ€” until I built an app to pace me through meals. Two to three months later my eating habits were rebuilt and the acidity was gone. Read the full story โ†’

Step 2 โ€” Shrink the meals

A full stomach pushes on the valve like an overfilled balloon. Swap three big meals for four or five smaller ones. Stop at "no longer hungry", not "full".

Step 3 โ€” Fix the timing

Nothing to eat within 3 hours of lying down. This one change removes most night-time reflux, which is also the reflux that does the most damage because acid sits on the esophagus for hours.

Step 4 โ€” Remove your triggers

Cut the usual suspects for two weeks, then reintroduce one at a time to find yours:

Avoid for now

Fried and fatty food, spicy dishes, tomato, citrus, onion, garlic, chocolate, peppermint, coffee, alcohol, fizzy drinks, large late meals.

Gentle choices

Oatmeal, bananas, melon, green vegetables, ginger, rice, potatoes, lean protein, plenty of water โ€” in small portions, eaten slowly.

Why these foods cause reflux โ†’

Step 5 โ€” Sleep smarter

  • Raise the head of the bed 15โ€“20 cm with blocks or a wedge โ€” extra pillows just bend your neck.
  • Sleep on your left side. The stomach sits below the valve in that position.

Step 6 โ€” Reduce outside pressure

  • Loose waistbands, no tight belts after meals
  • Losing even a few kilos of abdominal weight measurably reduces reflux
  • Stop smoking โ€” nicotine relaxes the valve and dries up protective saliva

Step 7 โ€” See a doctor if it's frequent

Symptoms twice a week or more, or lasting beyond two weeks, mean the esophagus may already be inflamed - that needs a diagnosis, not guesswork. Your doctor decides what treatment, if any, is right for you; your job is the six steps above, because they're what keeps reflux from coming back. What medicine can and can't do โ†’

How long does it take?

  • Days: fewer episodes once meal size and timing change
  • 4โ€“8 weeks: an inflamed esophagus typically heals
  • 2โ€“3 months: new eating habits become automatic โ€” this is when it stays gone

When habits aren't enough

See a doctor if symptoms happen twice a week or more despite these changes, you have trouble swallowing, unexplained weight loss, vomiting, or black stools. You may need an endoscopy to check for GERD damage, and a few people with a large hiatal hernia need surgical repair.

Make it stick

Knowing the plan is easy; doing Step 1 at every meal for three months is the hard part. That's why I built the FixMyStomach app โ€” it paces your meals, reminds you to chew, and tells you what to eat and avoid. Join the waitlist below to get it first.
