Acid reflux pain is a burn, not a stab

The esophagus has no protective lining against acid, so when stomach acid touches it the nerves fire a very specific signal: heat. Most people describe reflux pain as burning or pressure behind the breastbone that shows up 30–60 minutes after eating, when bending over, or after lying down. It can climb upward toward the throat and leave a sour taste behind.

If the acid keeps coming β€” as it does in GERD β€” the lining gets inflamed, and the pain changes from "burn after a heavy meal" to "ache all the time". That's what happened to me.

Where acid reflux hurts

πŸ’₯
Chest

Burning or pressure behind the breastbone β€” heartburn. Can feel alarmingly like the heart. More β†’

πŸ—£οΈ
Throat

Rawness, soreness, a lump-in-throat feeling, or pain when swallowing as acid reaches the upper esophagus.

πŸ«ƒ
Upper stomach

Gnawing or soreness just below the ribs, often with bloating and fullness. My daily pain lived here.

πŸ”™
Back

A dull ache between the shoulder blades. The esophagus and upper back share nerve pathways, so the brain misplaces the pain.

Acid reflux pain vs heart attack

This is the question that matters most, so be honest with yourself. Typical differences:

  • Reflux: burning; linked to meals, bending or lying down; eased by standing up or swallowing; often with sour taste or burping.
  • Heart: pressure, squeezing or heaviness; triggered by exertion or stress; spreads to the arm, neck, jaw or back; comes with sweating, nausea, breathlessness or light-headedness; not relieved by changing position.

If you are not sure, treat it as your heart and call emergency services. Doctors would far rather rule out a heart attack than miss one. Nothing on this page replaces that check.

How long does acid reflux pain last?

A single episode lasts a few minutes to a couple of hours and fades as the acid is cleared and neutralised by saliva. Pain that lingers for days, wakes you every night, or returns after every meal is a sign the esophagus is already inflamed β€” get it looked at.

My experience: the pain started as a post-meal burn I could ignore. Over four or five years it became a daily ache under my ribs. My endoscopy found a severe mucosal break at the esophagus–stomach junction β€” the pain was the lining literally wearing through. Read the full story β†’

Fast relief when it hurts right now

  1. Stand or sit upright. Gravity clears acid faster than anything.
  2. Sip water or chew sugar-free gum to wash acid down and boost saliva.
  3. Still hurting most days? That's a doctor's job, not a shelf's. What medicine can and can't do β†’
  4. Loosen tight clothing around the waist.
  5. Don't lie down for at least 2–3 hours.

Stopping the pain for good

Relief is easy; prevention takes habit change β€” smaller meals, no late eating, fewer trigger foods, and above all slowing down when you eat. The step-by-step treatment plan β†’. If eating speed is your weak spot, that's the habit the FixMyStomach app was built to fix.

This page shares personal experience and general information. It is not medical advice β€” please consult your doctor about your own condition.
